Camino Day 3: Roncevalle to Biskarreta

Updated: Nov 27, 2023

Day 3, Roncesvalle to Biskarreta ( 12km over 5 hours)

On this stage and the previous one, we utilized the Barricot transport service to have both Mom and Asha’s bags sent ahead to the hostel to give them a break and allow them to walk freely without weight. This definitely was the right choice for Day 2 and Day 3. With the Pyrenees now in the distance, this stage was the transition for the Camino entering into towns in Spain. We left Roncesvalle through a cool forested trail and landed in Burguete where we stopped to pick up some snacks at the small mini market.

Ernest Hemingway relaxed here and gained inspiration for his writings. Next we passed into Espinal, mostly hostels with lovely flower boxes in every window. After Day 1 and 2’s stages, were were grateful to be on a mostly level path of green, rolling hills without a lot of elevation. This gave our knees a break.

We made it to our destination – Casa Bati in Biskarreta – early enough to do laundry and go to the supermarket. Carmen, the hostel owner gave us a warm welcome and oriented us to this small town. We were so excited to rest our legs and use the kitchen to cook ourselves a nice dinner of tacos and salad! We were asleep pretty early and rested up for the next day's walk.
