Camino Days 23 -26: Finesterre

Updated: Nov 27, 2023

Days 22-26, Finesterre

A stomach bug kept us from walking from Lires to Finesterre but we made the most of our extra time in Lires. Because we weren't walking the additional 15km, we slept in and had extra time to enjoy breakfast at LiresCa restaurant, one of 2 restaurants in Lires. The owners were incredibly gracious and let us stay until our taxi came to pick us up. We recommend this lovely place if you find yourself in Lires. This art piece was one of my favorites there.

It took 20 minutes in taxi to get to Finesterre. Finesterre, with it's population 4,000 is located in Galacia, Spain and is the final destination for pilgrims on the Camino. It's one of the westernmost points of Spain, and the Romans thought it was the edge of the known earth. Each day they saw the sun set and disappear into the ocean and named it accordingly as "the land's end". Pilgrims would arrive, burn their clothes as a sign of purity, swim and find a shell as evidence to prove they had completed the Camino. The shell is the mark of all pilgrims - we have carried our's for the entire Camino.

We've been enjoying beach time. We did the 8km hike out to the Cape Finesterre today to see the westernmost point and walk on the rocks that jet out along the coast. On our way back we stumbled upon Pria Corveiro and couldn't walk past without getting the water. It is one of the beautiful beaches we've ever seen!

We have a couple of days here in Finesterre and intend to rest up and plan some adventures for our next leg of the adventure in Italy.
